We All Want to be Winners
Without creative planning, promoting a business can take a huge bite out of your budget. According to IDC/Link, a market research firm in New York City, small businesses shell out roughly $7,640 annually on advertising and marketing. Wouldn't it be nice to save that money for use elsewhere in your company? You can--with free press.
One quick way to get free publicity is to Sponsor a Contest. People get excited about contests, which is why Donald Jones began giving away brunch. Jones, president of New York Brunch Baskets, an Atlanta brunch delivery service, worked with local radio station V103 FM to design a "Brunch on the Boss" contest.
Listeners to one of Atlanta's top-rated morning shows were invited to submit nominations for best boss. Each morning, a winning letter was read out loud and the superior "superior" received a basket packed with croissants, jam, coffee, and juice from Jones's three-employee company.
The contest started out weekly but was so popular that it became daily. In return for the prizes ($28.50 each), Jones got baskets of publicity. During the second month of giveaways, his phone inquiries rose 40 percent. "It was exposure I couldn't afford to pay for," he says.
